The Toyota Way

My idea is to roll out a nationwide training programme in 'The Toyota Way' to help new (and established) businesses in this sector identify and remedy antiquated processes. There are established training providers but too many businesses consider this kind of investment a waste of time (even though it would pay back the costs many times over within a matter of months). Perhaps the government could make some level of training or adoption a mandatory requirement.

Why the contribution is important

Our manufacturing productivity consistently lags behind other countries of similar economic clout. In my considerable experience, this is because too many businesses have been slow to adopt modern, efficient management systems and production process innovations – one famous example being 'The Toyota Way'. From just-in-time delivery to developing a culture of willingness (eagerness, even) to admit to and rectify mistakes, there is so much that we still have to learn from these types of approaches, even though they have been around for years.

Thanks for your suggestion, Commenter3000. Do you have any examples of businesses that have benefited from this kind of training? It's always great to be able to point to specifics...

The 'Toyota way' has definitely benefitted a whole load of companies and industries - but should it be a 'mandatory' programme or rolled out across the board?

Could this stifle innovation and new methods of manufacturing? Would a more tailored package of support/consultancy be better for new companies entering the market to best maximise their efficiency and productivity?
